The Eagles have a lot of question marks heading into week one. Luckily, nothing serious, as just a handful of lingering issues. The Eagles were lucky to get out of the preseason and training camp healthy. Wentz, Jeffery, Bradham, and Rodgers are all either already ruled out or likely out week one. Here’s how I think the Eagles 53-man roster plays out.
QB (3)- Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Nate Sudfeld
No surprises here. Although I am slightly worried about this group to start the season.
RB (3) Jay Ajayi, Darren Sproles, Corey Clement
Josh Adams sounds like a standard rookie IR stash, basically the new NFL Redshirt. I put Pumphrey on the practice squad, but the Eagles might just hope someone claims him. Smallwood makes the team here again, somehow.
WR (7) Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, Mike Wallace, Mack Hollins, Shelton Gibson, Markus Wheaton, DeAndre Carter
Pending a trade or searching the waiver wire, we’re looking at Agholor, Wallace and Gibson as week one starters. Gibson also provides a lot on special teams. Wheaton makes the roster here with the unknown of how long Jeffery is out. Carter, has impressed but looks like a PS guy this year.
TE (3) Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Richard Rodgers
Rodgers doesn’t look like he will play week one, so they might bring someone in or keep an extra guy here.
OL (9) Jason Peters, Stefen Wisniewski, Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks, Lane Johnson, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Isaac Seumalo, Matt Pryor, Jordan Mailata
Chance Warmack is being shopped, he could save the team $1.65 million in cap. Eagles draft picks Mailata and Pryor both make the team here. Pryor was getting reps with Brooks out. The Eagles won’t risk losing Mailata on the waiver wire.
DE (6) Derek Barnett, Brandon Graham, Michael Bennett, Chris Long, Steven Means, Josh Sweat
Means could be another trait bait guy, which could free up a spot for a position that’s not as deep as DL is.
DT (4) Fletcher Cox, Haloti Ngata, Destiny Vaeao, Bruce Hector
The Eagles are lucky to have some versatile guys that can play both inside and outside. Hector has earned himself a roster spot. I kept Timmy Jernigan off, because he will start the season on NFI list.
LB (6) Jordan Hicks, Nigel Bradham, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Nathan Gerry, Joe Walker, LaRoy Reynolds
Nigel Bradham is suspended week one, but I thought it was silly to leave him off for a guy that’s going to have 10 more days on a 53-man roster. LaRoy Reynolds secured a spot when the Eagles cut Nelson. Even when Bradham is back, the Eagles should keep Reynolds, as they have a history of injuries at the position.
CB (5) Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, Sidney Jones, Rasul Douglas, Avonte Maddox
A couple fringe guys here that the Eagles can stash on the practice squad.
S (4) Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Corey Graham, Tre Sullivan
The consensus is that Maragos starts the season on the PUP. This leaves a spot for the Eagles to keep Sullivan until something better comes along.
STs (3) - Jake Elliott, Cameron Johnston, Rick Lovato
Practice Squad (10) DE Joe Ostman, DT Elijah Qualls, QB Christian Hackenberg, RB Donnel Pumphrey, WR Rashard Davis, S Jeremy Reaves, CB Chandler Sullivan, OG Darrell Greene, OL Toby Weathersby, CB D.J. Killings
