A Way Too Early Eagles 53 Man Prediction

By: Steve Johnson

This year’s early 53-man prediction was pretty tough. Say what you want about their overall talent, but the Eagles are a pretty deep team this year. I feel like I was reaching to add players to this roster. I ended up only leaving one guy off the team due to a potential trade. Although I think we could see 2 or 3 guys getting moved later on in the summer.

QB (3)- Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Matt McGloin

The Eagles brought in some experienced veterans to back up Carson Wentz this offseason.

RB (4)- LeGarrette Blount, Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Donnel Pumphrey

The Eagles are the definition of running back committee. Some people are saying the signing of Blount is overrated. Yeah he’s 30, coming off a 300 touch season, but even if all he is a short yardage back, that’s something they haven’t had in years. Pumphrey can contribute on special teams day one at minimum. Smallwood is going to have to come out of the gates hot in training camp.

WR (6)- Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Mack Hollins, Shelton Gibson

The acquisitions of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, even being basically one year deals is huge for the development of Carson Wentz. I could see Matthews being traded, but I left him on here because the Eagles think they can win now (crazy I know). Hollins can contribute right away in the red zone and on special teams. Gibson might be one of the steals of the draft, love this pick.

TE (3) – Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Trey Burton

Nothing too cute here. These 3 make the team and all contribute in their own way.

OL (9) – Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Allen Barbre, Brandon Brooks, Jason Kelce, Isaac Seumalo, Stefan Wisniewski, Chance Warmack, Halapoulivaati Vaitai

The Eagles are deep here, signing former first round pick Chance Warmack was a good move. They really like Seumalo, and they resigned Wiz, Kelce needs to play better or he’ll be moved. Lane Johnson needs to stay on the field.

DL (9)- Chris Long, Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Timmy Jernigan, , Derek Barnett, Vinny Curry, Elijah Qualls, Steven Means

The Eagles made a ton of moves to their DL this year, because defensive guru Jim Schwartz needs a good pass rush for his defense to be successful (crazy huh). Vinny Curry could be on the trading block as is Marcus Smith III, but nobody wants him so he’s cut. Steven Means can really get up field, so he makes it another year over McCallister who I have on the practice squad. Beau Allen starts the year on PUP.

LB (6)- Nigel Bradham, Jordan Hicks, Najee Goode,  Nathan Gerry, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Steven Daniels

I left Mychal Kendricks out because I think he’ll be traded. They signed Daniels because he’s going to play, that simple. Grugier-Hill contributes on special teams. Gerry is a very intriguing prospect, is he a safety or linebacker?

S (4)- Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Chris Maragos, Jaylen Watkins

Good starters, but little to no depth. Maragos is a special teams ace, but nothing more. Watkins makes the team, because they have nothing else and he’s been here. Maybe Terrence Brooks beats him out? Would love to see them get some depth between now and September.

CB (6)- Jalen Mills, Patrick Robinson, Ron Brooks, Rasul Douglas, Aaron Grymes, C.J. Smith

Robinson was signed to start, hopefully he has some left in the tank. They loved Brooks until he got hurt last year. Douglas should contribute right away. Grymes and Smith are familiar with the system and should make the team. Sidney Jones, can’t possibly be back, he’ll start on PUP or IR.

STs (3)- Caleb Strugis, Donnie Jones, Joe Dorenbos

No changes here. Insert cliche magic joke.

Practice Squad (10)-RB Corey Clement, C Tyler Orlosky, DE Alex McCalister, QB Jerod Evans, DT Charles Walker, WR Paul Turner, OT Dillon Gordon, WR Greg Ward Jr, G Darrell Greene, LB Joe Walker

PUP/IR List: Sidney Jones, Beau Allen
