History: Three-star recruit out of Austin, TX, he attended Lake Travis High School where in two seasons he led his team to 25-2 record and the 2011 4A State Championship. Mayfield, didn’t gain much interest from D1 schools so he chose to walk on at Texas Tech. An injury to the starter quarterback threw Mayfield into action week 1, he’s believed to be the first true freshmen walk on to start an opener at QB in the BCS era. Mayfield dealt with injuries and lost the job to current New York Giant Davis Webb (who transferred to Cal after the 2014 season after losing the job to Patrick Mahomes. Mayfield claim he transferred due to scholarship issue, which Texas Tech coach Kliff Klingsbury denies. He enrolled at Oklahoma in January in 2014 but sat out due to NCAA rules. Mayfield beat out Trevor Knight for the starting job in 2015. Was arrested in Feb 2017 in Arkansas for public intoxication and fleeing. In September 2017, Mayfield ran to the center of the Ohio St stadium and planted the Oklahoma flag, they ended up winning the game 31-16. Got into an altercation in Nov 2017 in the Kansas game, where Mayfield is seen grabbing his crotch and mouthing “F*** you!”. Mayfield apologized for both incidents. Became the first walk-on to ever win a Heismen trophy.

Strengths: Quick release. Competitive, cocky, and confident. Knows his progressions. Quickly processes information, goes through his reads. Looks off the safety well. Accurate in short to intermediate game. Uses his lower body well to put zip on the ball. Can pull the ball down and run, improv skills. RPO threat. Slippery in the pocket.

Weaknesses: Size, is only 6’0 5/8 and has 9 1/4″ hands. Immature, both on and off the field. Has had some balls sail on him. Ran the air attack at Texas Tech and the spread at Oklahoma vs Big-12 defenses. Throws a lot of off-balance throws.

Overview: Mayfield is undersized, but underrated in arm talent. He has the ability to extend plays with his legs. He would be best utilized in an offense that uses RPOs.
