Accolades: 2016 Sammy Baugh Winner

Injuries: Concussion vs Texas in 2014. Sprained AC joint in throwing shoulder in 2016.

History: The son of a former big league pitcher was a 3 sport athlete in Texas. Threw for over 4500 yards and 50 TDs as a senior, averaged 19 ppg in basketball, and was drafted in the 37th round by the Detroit Tigers (was a top prospect but fell due to his commitment to Texas Tech).

Strengths: Huge arm (clocked at 60 mph at the combine, throw a 80 yard bomb at his pro day. Is a gun slinger and is proud of it, has the type of confidence that will drive coaches crazy at first. Has the velocity to drop balls into tight field side windows. Can make off balance throws where the velocity wows you at times, best arm talent in the draft. Quick feet (4.08 20 yard shuttle and 6.88 3 cone drill were among the top times at the combine), can side step blitzers and improvise. Can make some plays with his legs, and gets the most out of his runs. Has really improved his play action and looking off defenders, effective on pump fakes.

Weaknesses: Can get sloppy with his mechanics, relying on his arm strength too often. Throws off his back foot a ton. Tries too much at times and his average speed/agility will get him into trouble in the NFL. Always looking to make the big play and will need to learn to live another day. The throws that don’t wow you almost always end up nearly intercepted. Will need to learn to slide more when running.

Overview: The Air Raid offense has a history of Quarterbacks putting up huge numbers and not succeeding, he’s not that guy. Coached up by one of the former air raid offense quarterbacks Kliff Kingsbury, Mahomes has improved every year. Will drive coaches crazy if he plays right away, will likely need a year to sit and learn. Ultimately, could be the best quarterback in this class as nobody compares to his arm talent.
