Accolades: Played in 2016 Under Armour All-American, 2017 Outback Bowl MVP
History: Four-star CB prospect from Cocoa, FL. Has declared for the 2019 NFL Draft, will forego his Senior season.
Strengths: Good size and length. Speed in pursuit is great. Excellent burst. He is going to really impress running at the combine. Although working out of slot, has shown the ability to make plays in deep zone (see int. vs Michigan). Great playmaking ability when he has the ball in his hands. Hips are fluid. Can turn and run with most. Explosive collapsing the edge. Productive career. Fierce competitor. Good motor.
Weaknesses: Worked primarily out of the slot in 2018. Overall consistency still lacks all around. Has mad some mistakes breaking down in the run game, as well as some footwork issues in coverage. Although 2018 tape is much better in terms of tackling, it makes you question if it was the position he was playing (deep safety). Would like to see him get off blocks a little better.
Overview: Gardner-Johnson is a really impressive athlete at the safety position. He has the range and playmaking ability to play deep safety, although he might be best suited as a modern day nickel hybrid safety. Was a better overall player when tasked with playing closer to the LOS.
