Accolades: 2018 Second-team All-Big Ten
History: Three-star prospect out of Bear, DE. Won a State Title his Senior year at Delaware’s Caravel Academy, as well as garnering All-State.
Strengths: Fast. Natural and fluid runner, especially in space. Quick twitch athlete. Read and react ability to jump passing lanes. Good playmaking ability, as evidenced by two interceptions returned for TDs in career. Can really lay the boom when he has built up speed. Fires down hill fast, weaving in and out of traffic with great footwork. Although not a lot of experience as a deep safety, he has upside there.
Weaknesses: Lacks ideal size and length, he’s under 5’11 and 200 pounds. Could really struggle matching up against some size, in the slow. Play strength is below average, does not bring much pop when feet are stationary. Has trouble bringing down ball carriers by himself, although he does a decent job wrapping up until help arrives. Has gotten his feet tied up sometimes when flipping his hips in zone coverage. Has trouble getting around blocks.
Overview: At first glance, I thought Savage was destined to play as a nickel safety, but his draft stock should ride due to the potential as a deep safety. Although he lacks ideal length, he is fast and has elite movement skills. He plays fast, yet controlled. He hasn’t yet maxed out his potential, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him sneak into the late first round.
