Final Eagles 53-man roster prediction

By: Steve Johnson

Finally the dreaded NFL preseason is complete, and today the Eagles made some obvious roster cuts. The Eagles need to have their 53-man roster completed by tomorrow at 4pm. So here is my final prediction for the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles. Keep in mind that moves can still be made, especially with other teams breaking down their rosters. Wheeling and dealing Howie Roseman will almost certainly make some addition moves after Saturday’s deadline.

QB (3)- Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Player to be Added

The Eagles cut McGloin and Dane Evans today, but I bet they bring someone in.

RB (4)- LeGarrette Blount, Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Donnel Pumphrey

The Eagles weakest position, they don’t have any one that stands out at RB. Pumphrey hasn’t shown us anything, I can’t see him being active on game days, but they spent a 4th round pick on him. I think Clement can be stashed on the practice squad without getting picked up.

WR (5)- Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Nelson Agholor, Mack Hollins, Marcus Johnson

Marcus Johnson is a lock to make this team in my opinion. Paul Tuner was waived with an injury settlement, so he’ll look for work elsewhere. There’s been rumors that Bryce Treggs is on the trade block so I don’t think he makes this team.

TE (3) – Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Trey Burton

Nothing changes from my prediction in May. Billy Brown shined in preseason, but I think the Eagles can get away with putting him on the practice squad.

OL (9) – Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Isaac Seumalo, Brandon Brooks, Jason Kelce, Stefan Wisniewski, Chance Warmack, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Dillon Gordon

The Eagles are deep up front. They gotta do a better job run blocking than they did in the preseason.

DL (11)-Vinny Curry, Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, Timmy Jernigan, Derek Barnett, Chris Long, Elijah Qualls, Steven Means, Beau Allen, Destiny Vaeao, Justin Hamilton

This is a lot of D-Linemen I know, but Jim Schwartz gets what he wants, for some odd reason. The Eagles are deeper here than anywhere else on their roster. Beau Allen came back quicker than expected. Means got signed to an extension. Hamilton, Vaeao, and Qualls all showed that they deserve to make the roster.

LB (5)- Nigel Bradham, Jordan Hicks, Mychal Kendricks, Joe Walker, Kamu Grugier-Hill

The Eagles can cut Goode and resign him later to get out of guaranteeing his contract, sneaky little Howie. Kendricks played like he wanted to be traded, but they’re not just going to give him away when he can contribute and they aren’t very deep here.

S (5)- Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Corey Graham, Chris Maragos, Jaylen Watkins

Graham is the backup for both safeties, then it would be Watkins, who can also play some corner. Maragos is too good on special teams to cut.

CB (5)- Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, Patrick Robinson, Dexter McDougle, Rasul Douglas

The Darby trade was huge for them, they were in big trouble without him. I can’t see them cutting McDougle after acquiring him not too long ago. Rasul Douglas is going to struggle if he has to play, but he’s a future safety/nickel combo.

STs (3)- Caleb Strugis, Donnie Jones, Rick Lovato

I’m not going to get cute and put Cameron Johnston on here. I’m also not going to cry about trading our long snapper. Don’t be that fan, you liked him because he did Magic.

Practice Squad (10)-RB Corey Clement, C Tyler Orlosky, DE Alex McCalister, QB Dane Evans, CB C.J. Smith, WR Shelton Gibson, WR Greg Ward, G Darrell Greene, LB Don Cherry, TE Billy Brown

Non Football Injury List/IR: Sidney Jones, Nathan Gerry
