Super Bowl LII: Madden Simulation

We did the ultimate Super Bowl LII Madden simulation. 15 min quarters, at all-pro difficulty, he rematch of Super Bowl 39 and here’s how it turned out.

The obvious that it was played by the New England Patriots vs the Philadelphia Eagles. The not so obvious, is that the Eagles were coached by Doug Pederson, the Patriots by “Griffin Murphy”.

A holding penalty and a Jernigan sack forced Brady and the Pats into a 3rd and 32. Mychal Kendricks blitzes the A gap and sacks Brady for a 7 yard loss, ending the Patriots first possession. A 15 yard return by Barner sets the Eagles up in good field position which nets a Jake Elliott a 48 yard field goal to put the Eagles up 3-0. On the following drive, Brady completed all 6 of his passes, ending it with a 9 yard TD pass to Brandin Cooks to give the Pats a 7-3 lead.

Foles led the offense down to the Patriots 30 before a Zach Ertz missed block that would’ve been a Blount long run, and a Vitai false start slowed down the Eagles drive. But being Nick Foles, he hit Smith for 13 yards on 2nd and 16 setting up an Ajayi first down. Ajayi then puts the Eagles up 10-7 with his 5 yard diving TD run up the middle. On the following possession, Brady completes a huge 18 yard pass to Hogan on 3rd and 15 to extend the Patriots drive, followed by a 14 yard first down to Amendola. Another huge Brady to Amendola hook up gets the Patriots 21 yards and into scoring position, the over is looking like a lock. A false start at 1st and goal from the 4 will not make “Griffin Murphy” very happy. Neither will the Eagles stuffing 1st and 2nd down runs. On 3rd down Brady threw into the end zone for Dwayne Allen, but he couldn’t tap his toes. Nice stop by the Birds, Pats field goal ties it up with 6:24 to go in the first half. Kyle Van Noy comes up with a huge sack of Foles on 3rd down to force an Eagles punt. Then on the next possession, Brandon Graham does the same.

Just before the 2 minute warning, LeGarrette Blount gives the Eagles the lead on a 38 yard TD run against his former team. Brady couldn’t put together a 2 min drive, thanks to a big sack by Vinny Curry the Eagles got the ball back with 1:07 left. Brandon Gaudin just made a big point that Alshon Jeffery hasn’t been targeted yet, give him the ball Doug! The Eagles are huddling up with 40 seconds to go, where is the sense of urgency! They are actually content being up 7 on the Patriots, have they never watched Tom Brady make a comeback before?! This is unbelievable, they let the clock run out at the Patriots 40. Granted, they do get the ball at half, and they’re up 7, but go for their throats!

To start the 2nd half, the Eagles couldn’t get anything going and were forced to punt. An excellent Donnie Jones punt inside the 10 stops New England from doing anything, and had to punt from inside their own end zone. The Eagles started from their own 41, but again, couldn’t sustain a drive. On first down from the 20, Brady hits Dion Lewis for 25 yards, bad coverage by Kendricks, these linebackers on their backs is going to be an issue in real life. The Eagles didn’t let them get past the 50 though, after a huge 3rd down sack by Brandon Graham, his 2nd of the game. At first, the Eagles couldn’t get their running game going on the following drive, but a Foles to Smith 17 yard pass and catch on 3rd down kept the drive alive. Then Blount busted it open with a 59 yard TD, to give the Eagles a 14 point lead with 5:45 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Eagles defense stepped up on the next drive, with a Rodney McLeod interception, giving his offense great field position. Charles Davis just said this is a “put away drive”, Eagles are in the red zone! Unfortunately, the drive stalls out, and the Pats hold them to a field goal, 27-10 Eagles. The Eagles run defense stops the Patriots in their tracks, forcing a 3rd and 14 and a sack by Patrick Robinson. The Eagles offense didn’t get anywhere, and Donnie Jones punted it into the end zone again to end the 3rd quarter. If the Eagles can get pressure on Brady in real life, they could easily win the game. In the simulation the Eagles lead the Patriots in sacks 6-1, Jernigan takes down Brady for his 2nd of the night. The pressure got to him again, and Nigel Bradham came up with an interception, giving the Eagles offense the ball at the 34. The Eagles were conservative after the turnover, handing it off Clement, Blount, and Ajayi on their way to Elliott’s third field goal, 30-10 Eagles with 10:56 left to go. Another turnover, another set up for great field position. Darby and Douglas nailed Burkhead, causing a fumble and recovery by Malcolm Jenkins at the 40. The Eagles settle for another field goal, going up 33-10 and pretty much putting this one out of reach. Jim Schwartz keeps bringing the heat, Fletcher Cox sacking Brady for the 7th time. But in typical Tom Brady fashion, he hits Gronk for a Patriots first down and into Eagles field position. The Patriots aren’t done yet, with Brady hitting Hogan for a TD. They converted on the 2 point conversion, but it may be too late, it’s 33-18 Eagles with 1:56 left. The Patriots went for the onside kick, but rookie Mack Hollins wraps it up. Pats head coach “Griffin Murphy” starts burning timeouts, as the Eagles use 3 TE sets with Blount deep to wrap this one up. Blount puts the icing on the cake, running in his 3rd touchdown of the night. The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl Champions…of the virtual world. Let’s hope, this Madden simulation is as realistic as it gets.
